Irmo vs Aiken | Final Score 2-1

Irmo gave up an early goal to Aiken in the game at the Green Hornet stadium tonight. Irmo had more attempts on goal, but turned in a lackluster performance during the first half of play.

Halftime discussion with head coach Phil Savitz and his coaching staff did the job because Irmo came out in the second half with the determination they needed to turn the tide against Aiken.

Kyle Simpson of Irmo drew a foul in the box which was netted on a Taylor Varney penalty kick. Later in the half, Irmo right winger (Leo?) crossed a beauty into the path of left mid Zach Acree who struck a fantastic uncontested side volley for goal number two.

Great job after a not so impressive first half.

Irmo faces White Knoll next week at home.

Irmo vs South Aiken | Final Score 2-1

Irmo went down early at home against South Aiken on a beautifully struck ball from 25 yards by #12 to the upper right corner of the goal. Irmo wasted little time mounting repeated attacks which produced a goal to tie the game by Junior Kyle McKewen who split the South Aiken defenders and beat the keeper to his left leaving Kyle with the chance to tuck the shot away on the back post.

At the half, Irmo 1 , South Aiken 1

Irmo opened the second half with the fire and passion this team has shown the ability to produce. South Aiken met the inspired Irmo players with their own level of passion as the game wore on. Zach Acree drew a foul just above the left corner of the box and as the South Aiken players argued with the referee Acree and his teammates remained focused on the objective of scoring with a quick start to the free kick whihc was crossed into the box where freshman defender Matt Sieverding finished the shot for what ended up being the game winning goal.

Irmo prepares to meet Aiken away this Friday.

Irmo vs Lexington | Final Score 2-1

The Irmo boys varsity soccer team (ranked #4 in region play and #5 in the state) faced off against 4-A region rival Lexington (ranked #6 in region play and #13 in the state) Wildcats tonight at Lexington. Lexington gave the yellow jackets a tough match as they defended well and generated way too many corner kicks in the second half of play. The first half ended 0-0.

Irmo sophomore Zach Acree drew a foul just above the left corner of the box and then teamed with junior Taylor Varney who stepped up to take the free kick against a Lexington keeper, who had already made a number of fantastic saves.

Varney picked his spot and struck the ball with precision bending it over the wall into the left upper 90 of the goal. An absolutely beautiful shot on frame! Lexington countered by drawing a free kick from the right side on a handball call. Lexington struck the ball to the far post where it was met by a Lexington player who headed it into the goal.

With the score tied and very little time remaining, Irmo stepped up the intensity with repeated attacks on the Wildcat defenders and keeper, which held until senior captain Jugal Dalal decided tonight would not be the night for overtime.

Dalal first ripped a shot to the inside of the left post from about 5 yards above the box, which the Wildcat keeper stretched to make a spectacular save on.

With the clock ticking to what may have been less than a minute to go in regulation the ball ended up at the feet of Dalal again, but this time the strike by the senior would be placed with laser precision into the right corner of the net from about the same place as his first shot.

Irmo fans on both sides of the stadium erupted in celebration as the Yellow jackets clenched their forth straight win and their 12th win on the season.

Great job by the entire Irmo squad in preparing for such intense play. Irmo now takes aim at a rematch with South Aiken and home on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets will be hungry for revenge after suffering an upset to South Aiken a couple of weeks ago.

Great job on the night boys and best of luck to you on Tuesday!

Irmo vs Chapin | Final Score 1-0

Chapin and Irmo battled hard for 80 minutes with more opportunities for Irmo than for Chapin during the first half, which ended 0-0. The highlight shot of the first half was hit by Kyle McEwan when he turned a ripped a shot from the top of the box that went just over the crossbar.

Both teams again fought hard in the second half of play with less possession by Irmo as Chapin mounted various attacks. In the final two or three minutes of play Irmo forward, Kyle McEwan, capitalized on a counter attack by connecting with forward, Taylor Varney, on a beautifully placed diagonal pass to his feet as Varney split the Chapin defenders to gain possession.

Varney exhibited tremendous composure as he drew senior Chapin keeper, Gregory DeMare, out as he attempted to make the save. Taylor touched the ball to the outside of his right foot ultimately beating DeMare with a well placed shot in the back of the net for the winning goal.

The Irmo win means Irmo retains the Superintendents Cup for 2008. Congratulations boys!
