The Irmo boys varsity soccer team (ranked #4 in region play and #5 in the state) faced off against 4-A region rival
Lexington (ranked #6 in region play and #13 in the state) Wildcats tonight at Lexington. Lexington gave the yellow jackets a tough match as they defended well and generated way too many corner kicks in the second half of play. The first half ended 0-0.
Irmo sophomore Zach Acree drew a foul just above the left corner of the box and then teamed with junior Taylor Varney who stepped up to take the free kick against a Lexington keeper, who had already made a number of fantastic saves.
Varney picked his spot and struck the ball with precision bending it over the wall into the left upper 90 of the goal. An absolutely beautiful shot on frame! Lexington countered by drawing a free kick from the right side on a handball call. Lexington struck the ball to the far post where it was met by a Lexington player who headed it into the goal.
With the score tied and very little time remaining, Irmo stepped up the intensity with repeated attacks on the Wildcat defenders and keeper, which held until senior captain Jugal Dalal decided tonight would not be the night for overtime.
Dalal first ripped a shot to the inside of the left post from about 5 yards above the box, which the Wildcat keeper stretched to make a spectacular save on.
With the clock ticking to what may have been less than a minute to go in regulation the ball ended up at the feet of Dalal again, but this time the strike by the senior would be placed with laser precision into the right corner of the net from about the same place as his first shot.
Irmo fans on both sides of the stadium erupted in celebration as the Yellow jackets clenched their forth straight win and their 12th win on the season.
Great job by the entire Irmo squad in preparing for such intense play. Irmo now takes aim at a rematch with
South Aiken and home on Tuesday. The
Yellow Jackets will be hungry for revenge after suffering an upset to South Aiken a couple of weeks ago.
Great job on the night boys and best of luck to you on Tuesday!
